Does anyone know how much one of these engines weighs? I know MkIIVR6 will know the answer to this one because he swapped one out of his Jetta, but he doesn't seem to be on here anymore.

Mr. Diesel? Do you know?

The reason I ask is because I've been looking at an engine swap for the Jetta (engine is shot) but I don't want to spend all the money to get my car towed from place to place so I was considering building my own engine puller using a pully system and a come-along or something. My dad was a carpenter for years so he'd be able to do the majority of the work, but I'm just wondering how much you think the engine weighs (w/out tranny, etc.. just the motor).

Any help is greatly appreciated. If I can find a donor for the Jetta, I may keep it off the road for a month and do body work on it during the time it's off the road (all new paint) before I get it back on the road. My laser turbo is costing me a lot in gas and insurance and I'd rather either find another A2 (haven't had any luck so far) or get a new engine in mine.

Also, any online resources on swaps? I'm just looking at doing a straight swap so I can't imagine it being too difficult giving it's not a conversion of any sorts.

Swapping 1.8L 8V's from MkII's is a breeze... If I were to guess, I'd would think it would be about 180lbs give or take. Me and my dad carried a 1.8L 8V engine, and it really wasnt that hard (or heavy). 16V's are a direct bolt in for your car... If I were you'd I'd get a 16V. There is a little more you have to do to get the 16V working with the 8V:

1. Bahn Brenner Fuel Rail for EFI 16v's
2. Injector cups from yoru 1.8L 8V head (they screw out and will screw right back into your 16V head).
3. A little bit of fabrication for the water sensors on the side of the 16V head.

there are some other misc things that have to be done, but it's definatly possible... Ohhhh you'd need a 16V tranny too.

A swap using the same engine will be very simple. Just label all the wires before you remove them
I just pulled a mk2 engine today by myself, here is how I did it
Block your engine up, unhoko everything and push it back. Then slowly lower the engine. I just jacked the engine up, then pulled out a brick and did that until it was on the ground

The tranny weighs 60lbs and the engine is in the 200ish range
It's easiest to remove the rear mount right from the engine, 4 13mm bolts.
If you can't get your cv tool to remove the damn cvs, use vise grips. Canadian tire sells the cv tool if you don't have one. If you need a part number ask me. The guy at the desk told me they didn't have any, but then I saw them on the shelf

autozone sells the 12 point 8mm tool you need they come in a set of 4 6, 8, 10 and 12 mm for about 5 dollars with a lifetime warranty. Use an impact wrench to get them off, it's MUCH easier than a socket wrench... Your chances of rounding off the bolts with a socket wrench are much higher too... use an impact wrench... i am sure those can be rented.

Awesome man, thanks for the tip. See I figured it'd be around 200lbs but my dad, who's more used to working on engines like 440s and 350s felt it was more than that.

I'll most likely to an 8V --> 8V swap rather than 8V --> 16V because the reason I'm going back to my Jetta is to take advantage of the ever-so-wonderful gas mileage they get.

With my laser... let's see, when I first bought it I brought it to the nearest gas station because it was almost empty and pumped $20 in. Sometime after that I pumped in another $40. A week later I was getting low and filled it up with $52 on the dot, my dad put in $20 when he took it for a long drive the other day, and then I put another $40 in yesterday. That adds up to $172 for the month and I haven't even been driving it hard at all compared to the way I drove the Jetta. Even my mom with her V6 only pays around $100 per month, and I was putting $60 - $80 per month into my Jetta and driving it hard all the time. Add to that my Jetta was $93/mo to insure and the laser is $155/mo so I'm really losing cash fast.

Thank *** I'm done school in 2 weeks so I can work full time or else I wouldn't have much money for school next year.

It's not really a big deal if you strip the CV bolts, vice grips get them off (just need to clamp them down tight) or cut the heads off then use the vice grips when they are out of the car. I don't see how you could get an impact in there to remove the CVs, I had a hell of a time today with my sockets on the passanger side CV so I used vise grips.
The cvs are the biggest pain of the whole engine swap.

Well... In that case, you should consider a 2.0L ABA crossflow engine from a MkIII... they ALSO bolt right in (need a 16V tranny)... only thing you'll need to do is mabey splice wires so they will reach considering injectors are ont eh front of the engine... I beat the living PISS out of my car, and I gotten a consistant 28.9mpg since march of 2005.... If you are nice to an aba, it'll get low 30's for mpg...

CV's are the biggest pain of the whole engine swap.

I completely agree... They have to be the worst part of a swap.

That's impressive. I always use fueleconomy.gov for fuel economy information but lately that site seems to be total BS. It says the 2.0L ABAs get 21mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. I figured that can't be right.

There's actually a 1993 Jetta on the lot at the local VW dealership. I took it to the ford dealership with my friend (a mech there) and we found so much **** wrong with it that's not very serious, just picky type things. The car was on the lot for $3500 and we offered $1500 and they said "well, that's pretty low, but we'll call you later to let you know... we'll call you no matter what"... they never called. I would have really liked to get the car except that it was an automatic and that's just no fun at all.

93's are very very rare... I would stay away from early automatics if I could.... you are asking for trouble getting into an automatic. Also, to put that price into prospective... I paid 2,600 for my 94 Jetta one year ago.... Soooo yeah... 3,500 is a super rip if it has a lot of little thigns wrong with it.

Edit: Forgot you are in Canada.... But still, that's about 3,050 USD's for that car, which is still rediculous.

Usually first model cars of a generation are crappy anyways

^ Exactly. That's one of the points I brought up with my dad because he felt that if we could get it for $1,500 - $2,000 I should've bought it, but I don't want to just resell right away if I don't like it (and I hate automatics) so I didn't get make another offer.

I think tomorrow I might start working on the Jetta if it's not pissing rain again. I just need to do pull the wires & label them and all that and start unbolting things that're in the way. Then when I've got the time (soon! school's almost out!) I'll get the engine out and open it up to see what's up. I'm pretty stoked on this, I've never done anything like this so it could be a good learning experience.

I took off my 2 front tires yesterday because I want to get the brand new tires off and sell them so I put on 2 of the 13s that came on the car when I bought it, both of them flat. It looks so funny, and because the tires are so flat the car is soooo low.

Thanks for all the advice.

When you are doing your CVs you either need to have the tire on the ground or someone in the car steeping on the brakes, just so you know.

you should swap to a 1.8T

^ That'd be a dream. If I had the money to do that kind of thing, I'd trash this and get a MkII in much better shape, get it painted, get the interior done, spend $2,000 on the stereo and $10,000 in other parts.
