Ya so... I got my "first" car last week, Passat vr6 and I know the guy showed me how to use the alarm, but now I cannot remember how to arm it.
I would of posted in the Passat section but it doesnt look like it is visited too much and I figure the alarm will be similiar on all Volkswagens of that year.

By the looks of the subject it sounds like you have a 96 :)... Those engines rule... That would be the awesomest first car ever. The sound from the 12V VR6 is godly when you have a cone filter on there.
Anyway, back on topic... Most of those Passats had "anti theft" not an alarm.... I guess it really all depends on your definition of "alarm". Unless an aftermarket one was installed, the anti theft is activated by either locking the driver door with the key, or pushing "Lock" on your keyless entry pad.
If any doors, trunk, hood or gas lid is opened while activated the alarm will sound. Also, the alarm will sound if you try to start the car while the anti theft is armed.... so if you climb in the window while the alarm is armed and try to start it, the alarm will sound.
Most VW's that year, the confirmation of the alarm being armed is the blinkers will flash once or the horn will sound once or both.

Do you have a keyless entry pad?

Nope I have like 7 keys for it though.

One of those might be the valet key... I am not 100% sure, but I think the valet key will only unlock the driver door... This may also cause the alarm not to be armed.
I would probably contact the previous owner and ask him whats up, or I would check all the fuses and make sure none are burned.
