After posting, I noticed that it's a Ford Focus engine.... I somehow missed that before, now I'm not so interested in it.
Actually, if I had the extra cash laying around for a diffrent Vanagon engine, I would be looking for a Porche engine and tranny and have a boxer in it again, the I4s really have a lot of vibration (at least with the 55 degree mount, I'm not sure about the 15 degree).
I once saw one that had a GM 4.3 Vortec and a Porche tranny, it ran really smooth and had pleanty of power.

It may be a Ford Engine, but the Focus has a lot of european influence in it.... Those little 4 banger Ford engines make a lot of power. The focus and that engine was clearly engineered around the european market.... I got waxed by a 4 cylinder focus while in my 94 Jetta.... They are quick.
Just because it is ford doesnt mean it's a bad engine... Due to the scrutiny Ford has recieved for engineering shizzy cars, Ford's quality control and engineering has really improved... I'll be a similarly equipped and priced Ford car (such as the Ford Fusion compared to the Jetta) would have less problems and cost less to operate over the course of teh life of the car vs the Jetta.... Only problem is, it's still a ford... not fun to drive and hideous as hell.
I think Ford makes good engines... Always have and IMO, always will (with the exception to 1985-1995 4 cylinder engines. BARF!!!

Of what I understand, that engine is German designed. I have heard lots of great things about it on www.thesamba.com. Though, if I were doing a conversion at this time, I would be putting a Subie EJ25 motor in, due to less cost.
