My friend and I checked out 2.0 today but unlike my car it had an air pump mounted to the engine. What is it's purpose ?

Where is the air pump located??? is it driven by the pullies??? if so, it is probably the "Secondary Air Injection" which pumps fresh air into the exhaust stream to aid in emissions durring cold startup.... It pulls virtually no horsepower from the crank, only thing is they are expensive as hell and totally necessary to passing emissions.... I thought they only did it on VR6's but, I guess they may have done it on california 2.0's or latemodel MkIII's.

It's located in the upper area in the front and is electric. On 2.0's without the pump you can see the holes where it would mount. It was a 98 and I have a 98 as well so maybe it was from cali.

Would you mind taking some pictures of this??? I am very interested in seeing what this looks like.... Most definatly sounds like the secondary air injection tho.
