I just had the first oil change done on my car since i have bought it. I took it to the dealer and holy s*@t was is $$$. any idea why, is there some thing special about the vw filters or oil. Granted i did get synthetic but there is no way i am taking it there again i will just do it myself next time.

well dealerships charged about a shop rate of $80 an hour, that says enough right there. Next time do it yourself and your lookin at like $40 with synthetic oil and a nice filter.

Yeah... dealership are often given the nickname "stealerships". They suck. You can get a good oil filter for like 6 bucks, then you can get mobil 1 syntheic oil for about 5 bucks a quart... You can also get the cheap mobil 1 clean 5000 for like 3 bucks a quart. 4 cyl jettas hold about 4.8 quarts.

Sorry about the rip off experience man. I'll tell you what. The first of my car experience came from changing the oil and spark plugs myself. Once you master that, then you become comfortable moving on to different things.

Let us know if you need any help with repairs or oil changes...

Welcome to dubnet, btw... Thanks for registering, and good luck with your car.

I feel your pain. I take my car to a stealership on a regular basis because the VW dealership here is the only place that knows anything about VW, and I don't have the time / ability to do things myself.

Anyway, they've been decent to me. I brought it in one time to get it looked at, they found something wrong and I was to bring it in later to get it fixed, they charged me nothing for the initial peek inside.

The other day, however, I thought I had blown a cylinder ring or whatever it's called that keeps the oil where it should be in the cylinders (I've been burning oil and there is oil coming out near the spark plug). So, I brought it in, they called me later and told me they found nothing wrong, so I went back to the stealership expecting to just drive it away free of charge, but instead I had to pay $62 pointless dollars for them to find nothing wrong with the car.

Makes me mad, but now I'm taking my car to my friend at the Ford dealership, they work for very cheap and I know I can get more info from talking to my friend later on than from 2 minutes with a stealership guy who doesn't seem to be happy often.

That's stupid... The local independent vw repair shops really make a good lving because the dealerships in this area alienate all the vw customers... It's rediculous. The ford dealership will work on other cars? Thats interesting cause I know a few people that work at the local ford dealership... Hmmm mabey I'll have to call them and find out if they work on euros...

i know talk about sticker shock, when i saw that oil change bill. I am going to have to find a place in town that works on vw's so i can avoid going to the dealer unless i really have to.

I do all my work myself, unless it's something really involved. Then I have a trusted mechanic just down the street. I always see these classic cars there, so I figure if they trust them with those cars, I can trust them with mine.
