I just got some eibach sportline springs for my car for 70 bucks shipped, lol. So now I'm looking for what struts to get, and where to get them. I also got a bentley fianlly, so maybe that will help me install them. I know I need a spring compressor, but when I went to autozone and asked the other day, the guy said there were 2 kinds, so I felt like an idiot, caus eI didn't know that... but yea, any info would be great

Just use your stock struts, they will work just fine.... if you are VERY VERY careful, you can use a c clamp instead of a spring compressor... Please wear thick over alls, and safety glasses, or you can really get f'ed up. You could even get a fat friend to squish down the spring while you fasten the nut on the strut.

Please don't use a C-clamp... that is risky very risky. As for there being to kinds of spring compressors that is news to me....

It's only risky if you are an idiot.... I modified my c clamps to make it a bit safer, but seriously... if you are careful, you can do it.

Guy I got these from said something about not needing a C Clamp? Said they are lowering springs, so you don't need one. Also said he'd walk me through the install process if I needed it.

Depends on the spring.... Like I said, if you have a fat friend handy you usually don't need the compressor.... With lowering springs you still might need to squish them a bit to get the nut on the strut.

Just get the spring compressors, they are cheap. I got mine for 30 bucks and have used them a few times. I think they say macpherson strut compressors on the package. Mine are just like these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Macpherson-Strut-Coil-Spring-Compressor-PLEWS-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33590QQitemZ7999483 924QQrdZ1 they work great. I would reccomend aftermarket struts, I was on just springs for about a week before I got sick of bouncing around and switched to the weitec 60/40.

I was going to do the spring install tonight, too bad there's NO way I'm getting that nut off the top of the strut without the vw specific tool, or at least some sort of socket with an opening, so I can get an allen in there too.. weird setup. Anyhow, this is going to be putoff till probably friday. I might go to auto zone and rent a spring compressor too, cause it's free and stuff... just in case.

That vw tool is like 8 bucks at the dealer... btw...

Edit: You can get them from VW Parts Place (michigan) too... they sell em cheap.

Do you have an impact wrench? Thats what I used. You could get that at autozone too. It also helps if you un-bolt the bottom first and pull down on the whole assembly while you unscrew the top nut.

HEY!!! that might work.... I never thought about that. An impact wrench might provide enough instant battering torque to remove that nut without the special tool... Autozone usually has a air tool set for around 60-100 dollars.

I'll look into that, having an air tool set would be beneficial for the future anyways, seeming how I"ll be working on my car so much.
