I also installed a new ecu but it ran fine after i did that.

ok when you put the key in to start it the fuel pump will kick on to preassuerise the system. now your fuel resorvor*sp lines and filter can hold alot of fuel. so you might want to have your pump kick on run then repeat untill you have it filled back up. how many times have you tried starting it? if youve tried alot there should be a way to check if there is fuel getting to the injectors. some way with the fuel rail. ill try to find that.

it smells like fuel is gettin there...its passing fuel..hmm i hope i dont screw my cylinder walls up with all that fuel in there washing down the walls..if it is :-/ i think the fuel filter might not be flowing enough fuel now.

It takes A LOT of cranking in the 1.8L 8V's to get it going again... I cranked for like 5 minutes to get mine going again.

it shouldn't be. mine sits for a week without running or more and mine starts right up!

I'm talking about running out of gas.... Mine was sputtering all the way to the gas station, and finally when I pulled into the station, the car just died.... Anyways, after I filled it up, it took a lot of cranking to get the beast going again.... A guy with a really wierd smile was looking at me with wide eyes.... Kinda freaky.

okay now its running but its acting weird...some times you have to crank it over a bunch of times...that and i think my cat just gutted itself.....the car stalled and a buch of grey smoke poured out when i tried to start it :-/ had to let it set for 20 min and then i started it up and no smoke at all O_o

*gives jettadude a cookie too*

well your cat is nothing but a bunch of screens and crap. the smoke may be from the lack of fuel yet getting to it and could be air in the line so its getting not enough fuel or somthing along those lines.

Worst case senario... The head gasket may have blown thus the car would loose compression becoming VERY hard to start... Once you did build up enough compression it could start burning all the fuel in the cylinders, PLUS the oil leaking into the cylinders due to the blown head gasket.... that could be what all the oil is... COURSE, that is the worst case senario.

well when you ran your tank dry you sucked all the crap out of your tank. so it might run like crap till it gets it all out of the system. i would change the filter.

run some Fuel system cleaner through. not just FI cleaner but there should be fuel system stuff. run that through and check your plugs. they might need cleaning.

Mr_Diesel

LOL, yeah.... All it takes is one time to run out of gas in an A2 to make you never want to do it again... LOL... I was at a stoplight when my car started sputtering... I was like... .Ohhhh ***, here we go... But it lasted for like 5 minutes sputtering... I ran the whole fuel system BONE dry!

the resorvor gives you a little bit of extra time to get to the pump. it holds a litre of gas pluse the lines must hold that or more.

jettadude

nope the thing the pump sits in. right next to the fuel filter. that holds a litre from what my chiltons says.

well i found out why i ran outta gas...my fuel gauge is f'ed...it just reads wrong....stupid fuel gauge. now im gonna have to try and fix the sender :-/

Mr_Diesel
04-01-2004, 09:02 PM
Yeah man... Easy fix... Just go to the junkyard and find the appropriate VW, and pull the sender out of the tank... There is an access panel under the rug in the trunk, if you didnt already know. It's super easy... I did it in under 10 minutes with my 88 jetta.

Mortal_Wombat
04-01-2004, 09:04 PM
would the sender out of a mk3 work... there are very few VWs in the yards around here, esp the a2 series and earlier...

Mr_Diesel
04-01-2004, 09:07 PM
Absolutly not... The entire system is motronic... And I would most definatly suspect the sender is different.

Mortal_Wombat
04-01-2004, 09:10 PM
crap monkey...i forgot they used motronic...*sigh* i guess i can live with it for now hehe

Mr_Diesel
04-01-2004, 10:54 PM
Did you just say "CRAP MONKEY"? LOL!!!! :D Anyway, If you want me to get you one, I can go pull one out of a junkyard car for a price... There are 4 or 5 a2 volkswagens in my favorite junkyard.
